What to do after your Top Talent Pass is approved

The sequence of steps between the approval email and a working life in Hong Kong: entry, ID card, bank, phone, MPF and tax.

Draft for review by the operating entity's legal adviser before publication.

Before you fly

  • Check the validity period printed on your e-Visa or entry permit and plan your first entry inside it.
  • Keep the approval, your passport and proof of address at your destination within reach; you will need them repeatedly in the first two weeks.

Your first 30 days

  • Register for a Hong Kong Identity Card within 30 days of arrival if you are permitted to stay more than 180 days. Book through the Immigration Department’s appointment system.
  • Open a bank account once you have an address document; most banks ask for passport, visa, proof of address and employment or income evidence.
  • Get a local SIM with real-name registration; many services send verification codes to a Hong Kong number.

Once you start working

  • Your employer must enrol you in an MPF scheme within the first 60 days of employment; check that it happens.
  • Salaries tax is assessed by year of assessment (1 April to 31 March). The Inland Revenue Department issues your first return after your employer reports you; keep payslips and your employment contract.
  • Note your limit of stay. Extension applications are made to the Immigration Department before it expires; the renewal guides below cover what they look at.
