Opening a personal bank account in Hong Kong

What banks ask for, why applications are declined, and how to prepare.

Draft for review by the operating entity's legal adviser before publication.

Documents banks commonly request

  • Passport and Hong Kong ID card (or the registration slip), your visa, and a recent proof of address.
  • Evidence of employment or income and an explanation of the account’s purpose and expected activity.

Why applications fail

  • Address proof that is too old, not in your name, or from a source the bank does not accept.
  • Inconsistent answers about source of funds or purpose. Banks decide at their own discretion and rarely give reasons.

Virtual banks

  • Licensed virtual banks open accounts through an app with the same identity checks; they can be a practical first account while a traditional bank processes your application.
