Opening a business bank account in Hong Kong

Why business accounts take longer than personal ones, and the evidence that moves them along.

Draft for review by the operating entity's legal adviser before publication.

What banks look for

  • Company documents (incorporation certificate, business registration, articles, the latest annual return), an ownership chart down to the natural persons, and identity documents for directors, shareholders and signatories.
  • Proof that the business is real: contracts, invoices, a website, supplier and customer details, and a plausible description of expected turnover.

Timing and alternatives

  • Traditional banks can take several weeks and may ask follow-up questions; virtual banks and licensed payment institutions offer faster business accounts for straightforward profiles.
